DENKYIRA TRADITIONAL COUNCIL TO INSTALL NEW DENKYIRAHENE

The Denkyira Traditional Council has announced a ban on funerals, noise-making, and all forms of public gatherings within Denkyira lands as part of customs and traditions leading to the enstoolment and coronation of a new king.


The restrictions take effect from Monday, September 22, 2025, and will remain in force until further notice. According to the Council, the directive is in line with long-held traditions of the Denkyira state to preserve sanctity and order during such historic occasions.


As part of the royal rites, the official naming and confinement of the new Denkyira King will take place on Monday, September 29, 2025.


The Publicity and Media Subcommittee of the Traditional Council has urged the general public to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.


The new Denkyirahene will succeed the Late Odeefuo Boa Amponsen III who joined his ancestors in 2015. The new Denkyirahene is expected to unite all the Denkyiras in Ghana and diaspora for development. The Denkyira Kingdom is believed to be the leader of all Akan state in Ghana. Denkyira started ruling since 1500, two centuries before the formation of Ashanti kingdom.


About 70% of Akans are Denkyiras, according to various sources of archives. The Denkyiras are the originators of most Akan traditions and culture, for example Odwira festival, akan political hierarchy, most akan drums, preservation of dead bodies, and the famous Twi language are all handy of work of Denkyira Kingdom.
