13,624 km of roads were built by Akufo-Addo, according to Asenso Boakye.

Francis Asenso Boakye, the former Akufo-Addo administration's immediate predecessor as Minister of Roads and Highways, has denied assertions made by Kwame Agbodza, the Minister-designate for Roads and Highways, claiming the previous government built 673 kilometers of new roads in its eight years in office.

Peaking in Parliament on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, Asenso-Boakye explained that the transition report shows that the NPP Government built 13,624 kilometers of roads between 2017 and 2025.

He said that Mr. Agbodza's exclusive focus on the 673 kilometers of recently built roads gave an inaccurate impression of the accomplishments of the NPP government.

Mr Asenso-Boakye emphasised that the administration’s efforts included asphalt overlays, re-graveling, reconstruction, all of which contributed significantly to improving the national road network.

"Mr. Speaker, the Akufo-Addo administration built 13,624 kilometers of roads between 2017 and June 2024." This figure far surpasses the 4,630 kilometres constructed by the previous Government,” Asenso-Boakye declared, providing a detailed breakdown to substantiate his

1,955.25 km of asphalt overlay; 35 bridges; 673.27 km of new construction

6,185.90 km of graveling and re-gravelling; 1,665.07 km of rehabilitation

Surface/Upgrading: 2,538.40 km

Resealing distance: 101.02 km

231.90 km for partial reconstruction

He explained that Agbodza's 673 km total only included roads built from the ground up and did not include important projects like upgrading, regravelling, and rehabilitation. He maintained that these initiatives have turned highways that were previously unusable into useful resources for the country.

As an example, Asenso-Boakye emphasized how the Ofankor-Nsawam route is currently being renovated and upgraded, greatly increasing its usability. “The facts speak otherwise, but Agbodza selectively emphasized one component to fit his narrative,” he claimed.

espite these disagreements, Asenso-Boakye commended aspects of Agbodza’s vision, such as prioritizing road maintenance, uncapping the Road Fund, and completing critical uncompleted projects—strategies that align with the NPP’s road sector policies.

"Kwame and I have a long history together as KNUST student leaders. I've respected his commitment to and proficiency in public service over the years. If he is accepted as the Minister of Roads and Highways, I am confident he would perform well," he said.

The lawmaker from Bantama urged Parliament and the general public to recognize the NPP administration's larger growth of road infrastructure, emphasizing that upkeep and improvement of a strong road network
