Professor Michael Kwateng, Head of Cocoa Protection and Anti-illegal Mining Unit at COCOBOD advised all Ghanaians to rally behind government to fight irresponsible mining in Ghana.
He made the call during a Penel Discussion organised by Chartered Institute of Financial and Investment Analysts Ghana, in collaboration with Ghana Communication Technology University-Accra, during an induction of members of the institute.
The theme for the occasion was "The Role of Financial Analysts in addressing Environmental issues. The Guest Speaker for the occasion was Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, Vice Chancellor of Ghana Communication Technology University-Accra. Newly admitted members, as well as qualified members of the institute were inducted into the profession after the panel discussion moderated by Dr. Gabriel Odeh Apotey.
Professor Kwateng revealed that in all his engagements with various communities, farmer groups, chiefs, mining operators, media personnel, security personnel, mining and environmental regulatory bodies, district assemblies, etc . He has come to conclusion that unless every member of these groups or Ghanaians decides to do the right thing by withdrawing their parochial interest from illegal mining activities, it would be very difficult for the government to fight canker. People are trapped by the illegal mining syndrome due to illicit financial motivation attached to the menace. He opined that the call for government to ban mining in Ghana is not the remedy but all stakeholders should be brought to the table to find lasting solutions to the problem.
Other panelists on the programme who contributed to the topic were Amb. Dr. Rejoice Foli ( UN Peace GlobalAmbassador), Prof. George Oppong Appiagyei Ampong (Dean of Business School-GCTU). Dr. Daniel Amateye Anim-Prempeh (President, CIFIAG), Dr. Emmanuel Attah Kumah Amponsah (Environmentalist, GCTU) and Madam Gloria Addison (Gender Activist).
