The Tiahiabua Sword of Denkyira

The Tiahiabua, known as the Denkyira State Sword, was introduced by Nana Mumunumfi, King of Denkyira, around 1590—over 435 years ago. It stands as a powerful symbol of authority, unity, and royal continuity within the Denkyira Kingdom.

In Ghana’s broader context, the concept of a State Sword was later adopted by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the nation’s first President, who used it for his presidential swearing-in ceremony on July 1, 1960.

Yet, the Tiahiabua of Denkyira predates this, having been first used by Denkyirahene Werempe Ampem in 1624 to signify the unity and sovereign power of the Denkyira Kingdom.

From that time onward, every Denkyirahene has sworn the traditional oath of office upon the Tiahiabua, reaffirming his loyalty to the people, the ancestors, and the spirit of Denkyira’s sovereignty.

In return, the sub-chiefs and elders (Nananom) also swear their oaths of allegiance on the same Tiahiabua, thereby sealing a sacred covenant of loyalty and harmony that continues to unite the Denkyira Kingdom under divine ancestral guardianship.

DENKYIRA IS THE HEARTBEAT OF AKANS AND GHANA’S CIVILIZATION

THERE ARE REASONS WHY OSAGYEFO DR KWAME NKRUMAH WANTED TO MAKE THE DENKYIRAHENE THE KING OF GHANA AND HIMSELF THE PRIME MINISTER.
